Huge traffic jams on the interstates, extended flight delays at the airports...wait a minute! No, it's highly unlikely that the perennially infamous experiences of Thanksgiving Day in America will happen this year, and that's something to be thankful for - isn't it?

However, the reason in 2020 that we will not have what is usually the biggest travel day of the year in the U.S. is the very same reason that we will not have as many of the massive gatherings of family and friends that we've grown accustomed to every fourth Thursday in November. We will not have the Macy's parade in Manhattan. There will not be as many gigantic spreads of everything under the sun (at least not as much as in previous years). It's actually pretty mind-blowing to consider the almost infinite number of ways that an untamed virus effects a society. But we are continuously learning about that first-hand every day.

Nonetheless, on the upside (and there always is one), we can also consider the fact that every generation has faced overwhelming difficulties of some sort - and all these things have compelled us to find a way to overcome them. We eventually do overcome these things, sooner or later - through dedication, hard work, sacrifice and the ever present grace of God. It is indeed those aforementioned attributes that have coalesced (despite the accompanying political chaos of the day) that have helped us look forward to the very near future when the Covid-19 vaccine becomes available to the public.

On that point, we can be thankful for having the greatest biologists, geneticists, virologists and pharmaceutical researchers in the world. We can be thankful for having the bravest, most dedicated and highly trained front line workers in the world. We can be thankful for the family and friends that have lent us helping hand when we needed it the most this year. We can be thankful for the various forms of technology (both low-tech and high-tech) that have made it possible for us to work, teach and learn from home. We can be thankful for those same forms of technology that make it possible for us to still spend quality time with loved ones even though they're not all physically at the same address with us - especially on November 26th. We can be thankful that there's no food shortage in America today(!!!) Hello?

Now, before I forget that I'm writing a post for my family's business, please indulge the fact that our family business is in the business of providing many creative ways to say 'Thank You' to those who deserve the thanks these days. Among the more timely awards that we provide are those that are appropriate to the vocations I listed in the previous paragraph, as we offer specific recognition awards for nurses, doctors and many other service professions, such as firefighters, police officers and military service members.

We also have an extensive line of tastefully designed awards that can be adapted, via engraving, for any occasion that calls for a genuine 'Thank You'. Perhaps this time of year calls for it more than any other time of year. But no matter what time of year it is, there's always someone needing to be thanked, for something, at some time. You can view our safe & secure e-commerce website or visit our showroom in Yonkers, New York for more information on ordering these items of recognition and more, as well as our extensive selection of traditional recreation for the home.

Now hopefully, with all the challenges that lay ahead (both expected and unexpected), we can still find a way to counterbalance the frustrations of coping with these challenges - whether it's global pandemic or not. The only way we can begin to do this counterbalancing is by genuinely acknowledging all the many things that we can be thankful for - not only on Thanksgiving Day, but the whole year round! So to those who think the glass is always half empty, remember that it means it's also always half full - and that's big picture when it comes to being thankful.

~Roger V. (Actually We've Been Back For A While.) So THANK YOU!
 Well, it's been one of those years - and it's not over yet, is it? A global pandemic, social distancing, political unrest - I wonder what these waning weeks of 2020 still have in store for us(!). Hopefully, this "new normal" that many are prone to talk about is anything but. Though wearing a sanitary mask and social distancing is probably a good idea anyway in safeguarding against airborne viruses (whether there's a pandemic or not), I think I speak for many when I say that a vaccine can't arrive soon enough so we can have the same bulwark against Covid 19 that we already have against influenza, tuberculosis, typhoid, malaria, diphtheria (well, you get the idea!) and then we can get back to social closeness, large family gatherings, indoor restaurants, music concerts, sold-out sporting events, etc.

With all the major upheaval throughout the world caused by the pandemic, and the absolute tailspin effect it's had on so many industries and national economies, it's good to know (and to be grateful for the fact) that we're still here, still working and still serving the people that make it possible for us to work in the first place...our customers.

Although we had to temporarily close our doors during the initial lockdown, we gradually (and cautiously) got back to business with our customers, at first via website sales and e-mail sales. Eventually, we were able to physically open the doors of our store to the general public with, of course, the requirement of wearing masks and socially distancing.

There have been so many companies in the world that have been effected in such a profoundly negative way, I am amazed at the fact that even though we had every risk of being pulled by that same negative undertow, our customers remained loyal and resourceful, and showed us that 'recognition' and 'recreation' (specifically for the home) are two things that are, in many ways, right up there with food and water. Although being cooped up in quarantine for several months can do a number on our personalities and not being able to gather in mass numbers puts the kibosh on any formal presentation ceremonies, our customers have refused to give up.

Our pool-table customers have taken advantage of being home more often than ever before that they have kept us busy beyond our wildest expectations. Perhaps in some small way, we have contributed to keeping families "sane at home":) Meanwhile, our awards customers have rightfully decided that, even though in-person presentations and award banquets are just not going to happen this year, the people that have earned their 'recognition of excellence' still deserve to receive that 'recognition of excellence' - in whatever it is at which they excelled. It made perfect sense to us, and thank goodness it made perfect sense to our customers!

So even though we have been temporarily slowed by a worldwide catastrophe, we can now say with full confidence that "we're baaack"! But actually we've been back for a while now, and that was only made possible by the kind of loyalty from customers that, in effect, said to us that they want us back. And for that, we say to all of our customers who have kept us going this year a massive and heartfelt, "THANK YOU!!!".
The Accoladehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06501121960658076811noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3056417396693833181.post-73099374887226417442019-11-19T11:59:00.001-08:002019-11-20T12:01:07.159-08:00New Makeover in the Showroom!

For us here at Loria, it's been decades (literally). But when it rains, it pours (also, literally). <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Our roof withstood enough rain for the last 30+ years for it to merit a new one. This made it possible for us to finally give the interior ceilings a makeover, which in turn lead to fresh, new carpeting throughout the awards showroom. We re-arranged our displays for a more spacious customer experience as well. It looks great and has garnered compliments from our through-the-door customers as well.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Here at Loria, we strive to offer a wide variety of awards, spanning many different materials and designs. Among the most popular, over the years, has been the attractive look of glass and crystal awards. At a glance, there doesn't appear to be much of a difference in the "look" of the material. But that's<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> <i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">at a glance<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> and not a very close look, as we are about to have in this post. Since our variety of glass and crystal awards just about run the gamut in price-points, it only makes sense to explain why this is. It's actually a fascinating foray into the world of crystallography and geology. But don't worry - we won't require you to sit through something comparable to a sixty-minute Smithsonian Channel special on the subject. Just some fun-facts should suffice in explaining the difference between glass<i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif; font-size: x-large;"> <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">that is<i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;"> just glass<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> and glass that is <i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">crystal<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> In a nutshell, the reason for this difference is because all crystal is glass, but not all glass is crystal<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">*<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">. Glass is a generic term applied to all types of glass. But crystal is a sub-category of glass with certain properties that other types of glass do not have. Therefore, they cannot be accurately classified as "crystal". The general classification of all forms of glass being "glass" is derived from the dictionary definition of the word: <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">"a hard, brittle substance, typically transparent or translucent, made by fusing sand with soda, lime, and sometimes other ingredients and cooling rapidly"<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">The classic look of the crystal
obelisk on a black base.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> But the material known as "crystal" is a unique form of glass, and really the most organic form of it, as it develops within the earth and is mined from the earth - unlike glass which is completely man-made using various ingredients. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Of course, ultimately, the designs that you see in our finished glass and crystal awards are designed, engineered and manufactured by people. But the actual materials are quite different in how they arrive at the award designer's table. Naturally forming crystals are mined from crystal caves much like mining for precious gems.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> One the most prolific if these crystal caves is located in Mexico.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The Cave of the Crystals (or "Giant Crystal Cave") <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">is a <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">cave connected to the Naica Mine at a depth of 300 meters, in Naica, Mexico (in the Chihuahua region). The main chamber contains giant selenite crystals, some of the largest natural crystals ever found in the world<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">**<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Scientifically, true crystals are pure substances whose atoms, molecules or ions are arranged in an ordered pattern, where they extend in all three spatial dimensions. The purity and orderly design of true crystals recall the metaphoric expression of something being "crystal clear". This can only come from nature. Nonetheless, there needed to be some kind of definitive threshold for determining what is "crystal" and what is not crystal in the marketplace.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> *According to the European Union in 1969, three specific criteria were established to define "crystal" in the marketplace: lead content of at least 24%, density of at least 2.90 and a reflective index of 1.545. The required minimum of 24% lead content is certainly the most widely recognized distinction among most crystal dealers and crystal awards dealers, as to what separates a particular glass item as "crystal". Also due to this lead content of at least 24%, there is a very noticeable weight difference when holding a crystal award versus a non-lead glass item of comparable dimensions.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> The knowledge of this property difference is crucial in concisely informing our customers of what they are paying for when they see the noticeable difference in price. ("Here, hold the two pieces and you'll feel the difference...", so to speak.) When a customer marvels at the difference, this also reveals that the customer is concerned not only with the visual impact of an award, but the weight difference. Why should this matter? Personal presentation. When the customer is personally presenting the award at a formal ceremony, and budget is less a concern than impression on the recipient, weight matters. It's like the topics that carry more weight than others in conversation. They make an impact and attract more notice. It just carries more weight (pun totally intended). Not only that, but the visual brilliance of crystal is far more impressive than glass, specifically when it's sufficiently illuminated. Light shot through optically flawless faceted crystal (or "cut crystal"), refracts and separates into the colors of the visible spectrum, much like a prism - which makes the purity aspect of crystal something to be coveted.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Nonetheless, not to sleight the wide variety of non-crystal glass awards, there are advantages to glass that is not directly mined from the ground. Man-made glass compounds can be manipulated to the point of composing mixed-media awards that cannot be achieved with mined crystal. Take, for example, a series of awards known as "Art Glass". This is one very popular series here at Loria due to the uniqueness of the look, which can only achieved using glass compounds. Also, as is the case with glass products versus crystal products, they meet the needs of the more budget-conscious customer.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> On that point, it can be said that not all glass awards are the same either because all crystal is glass, but not all glass is crystal. Furthermore, when it comes to the world of awards, it's crystal clear that there's more to it than meets the eye.
Last month, we marked two very significant events in the history of the United States of America. One was our July 4th Independence Day celebration, which annually reminds us of the very first day in our nation's history. This year we celebrate the 243rd anniversary of that all-important day. The reverberations at the forming of this new nation were cataclysmic throughout the European world and beyond.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> The other significant event was the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing by the Apollo 8 astronauts on July 20, 1969. This milestone of truly epic proportions captivated the world at the time because it was, as Neil Armstrong so famously said, "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.".

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Back on earth, we at Loria share at least one important quality with both of these world-changing events in human history. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">We may not have effected any sea change in the political landscape of this planet. We may not be a nationally recognized household name or be anything that even remotely resembles a global phenomenon. But we do have one thing in common with our nation's founding and the first moon landing - the spirit of independence.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> I refer to the fact that Loria has always been an independent company, family-owned and operated since our founding in 1912. The company founder, Verniere Loria, was a southern Italian immigrant who came here with virtually nothing to seek a better life for himself and his family - something tens of millions of people have done before and since then. This ties into one of the main reasons why this nation was founded as well - to create a society where individual aspirations and achievements can be the building blocks of a prosperous and free society. It would not be used as a the tool of serfdom, ruled unilaterally by a monarchy of unchecked power, but as a place that the Declaration of Independence so poignantly identifies as a place of, "...life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.". We would no more return to foreign colonial rule, but become the exact antithesis of that - a constitutional republic.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The founder of V. Loria & Sons, Verniere Loria,
second from right (circa 1920s).

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Over the course of the next two centuries following the American Revolution (and the politically seismic effects it had on the West), the U.S. would go through many horrific battles and threats to this grand experiment. Nonetheless, it would survive even the greatest threat to its existence (The Civil War) and thrive, by continuing to attract people of all backgrounds in search of a better life and the freedom to work for it. In the process, it would also attract the greatest talent the world had to offer, which would ultimately culminate in what only the astronomers of the ancient world could dream about - putting a human being on the surface of the moon. This meant travelling upward and outward into space - approximately 250,000 miles from the surface of the Earth.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> It takes a certain faith, wisdom, courage and consummate "can do" attitude, in conjunction with certain God-given abilities to break away from the greatest empire in the world (at the time) and form a new nation as it does to develop and deploy the right technology and personnel to send people to the moon. It takes these attributes to embark on a mission to create a way to for a man to travel to and from outer space and land on the moon safely. It also takes these attributes working together in harmony to leave the country of your birth and family upbringing, and go to a completely foreign land that holds the promise of fulfilling such a life and livelihood. All three of the aforementioned achievements, though varying in scale, have much of the same principles in common, which is embodied in what we call the "spirit of independence".
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> From a socio-economic perspective, it was the independently owned & operated businesses that became the economic foundation of this nation at its founding, initially culminating in the Industrial Revolution of the mid & late 1800s, and evolving into the all encompassing technological world in which we live now. Even though our company here in Yonkers carries products and services that are more of a traditional nature than all the tech that dominates society today, we at Loria (like all companies these days) have still benefited from the massive breakthroughs in the tech world, including the constant use of e-mail communications and the creation of our custom-made, e-commerce website.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Now even though we extol the virtues of American independence and the great nation we subsequently became by way of unfettered freedom (as we should), there is still a 'dependence' of sorts that is required for any of these achievements to get off the ground and continue - dependence on those who make it possible.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> The American Revolutionary War for independence from Great Britain was still 'dependent' on the immeasurable courage and sacrifice of the lowly soldiers who were willing to risk their very lives to see this fight successfully fulfilled. NASA's map to the moon was dependent on the gifts and talents of those who were willing to sacrifice most of their waking hours to put those gifts and talents to work in the the most concentrated and rigorous ways possible.

Loria Corporation, though infinitely smaller in scale to the Revolution and the moon landing, was still dependent on the courage and sacrifice of one Italian immigrant willing to take the risk of starting a new business in a foreign land. Even so, suffice it to say that none of this would continue for another moment for us here at Loria if we did not acknowledge the fact that we are always dependent upon<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">our customers. Ultimately, the spirit of independence has to be tempered with genuine gratitude in order to truly appreciate the blessing that independence brings.
Some of these trends come and go for practical reasons (i.e. too expensive to produce, not competitive in the marketplace anymore, etc.). Sometimes the industry just needs something new to spark new interest.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> But whatever the state of the awards industry happens to be at the time, the need for recognition never wanes. It is always present. People need to be recognized for their accomplishments (whether they know it or not). Of course, that innate need keeps those of us who are in this business...<i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">in business<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">. Moreover, that innate need is always there to be satisfied, even outside the realm of the awards industry.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> However, speaking in terms of the "business of recognition", the task of satisfying that need (whether it's corporate<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> <i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">or<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">personal) is usually<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;"> <i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">not<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;"> <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">initiated by the person being recognized. The reason I point this out is because that person in being entrusted to make these selections on an annual basis that he/she believes the recipient will like and/or meet the standards and tastes of, perhaps, a <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">committee<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> of people. Sometimes this person will establish an aesthetic and stick with it annually, and sometimes he/she will be looking for something new each year. Either way, there has to be "something for everyone", whatever the aesthetic taste, whatever the occasion.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Therefore, it i<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">s the duty of the awards industry to be diligent in creating new ways to provide people with "expressions of recognition". On that point, it is variety that is at the heart of the awards business (as it is for just about any business). Here at Loria, we present a selection that maintains the "classics" in awards, like the "loving cup" and the "achievement torch", as well forging new avenues of recognition, like the abstract designs that predominate acrylics and glass & crystal. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> So, if you're in the market for letting someone know how much they're appreciated or how much they achieved, go no further than Loria - where wide variety and attentive service will make it easy for you to make that happen!
It's an ever-relevant message that transcends the calendar. It's also a message that I wrote in an article almost twenty-five years ago, when we were physically printing paper awards newsletters (remember them?). Even though the circulation format is different from then, the name of the newsletter is the same today, in our current digital version, as it was in our printed version, a quarter of a century ago - as some things don't necessarily have to change. Now even though some of the athletes mentioned in the original article may not ring a bell to some readers today, the overall message still rings true. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">So, here it is (again) - this time in "cyber" black & white <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: medium;">(and red, of course, for direct links to our website)<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">...
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">"How Important is Recognition"
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Imagine, if you would, the World Series without the Commissioner's Trophy. Imagine the NHL Finals without the Stanley Cup. How about the Super Bowl sans the Vince Lombardi Trophy. What's the big deal? On the surface, they're just pretty metal statues in sports that are passed on from one team owner's office shelf to the next. Then why is their acquisition, though difficult to accomplish and fleeting in duration, so coveted every recurring season? Why do the writers seek the Pulitzer and stage actors the Tony? What is it about the Nobel Peace Prize that carries so much global honor and prestige? In a word: symbolism.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Accolades such as these and awards of any proportion symbolize all the sweat, all the effort, all the trials, heartbreaks, challenges, hurdles, and shortcomings that come with the journey to true excellence. This may sound overly dramatic, but imagine their absence. Imagine finishing at the top of your trade and having no tangible, physical representation of your achievement to remind you of the memory, to compel you to further action, to reinforce your confidence, or to restore your faith when future challenges square their shoulders against you. From the thrill a child may get from a "gold star" in elementary school to their first Little League trophy to earning a college degree, the general idea is the same; recognition - that is, recognition of themselves as well as by those around them. The emotive impact of recognition is a critically important quality to acknowledge and maintain in every walk of life. It's just as integral to our self-esteem as any form of acceptance.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Recognition can be a simple "thank you" or a pat on the back. It can be a heartfelt "congratulations" or a "high-five". It can be a bittersweet "goodbye" or a hug. But better yet, it can be an actual symbol of that gratitude, admiration, or farewell wish. The expression of recognition is an expression of giving. It represents the intrinsic value of our own talents, skills and abilities, then immortalizes the accomplishments they produce. It is to the seeking of excellence as the peak is to the mountaineer.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> The expression of recognition comes in many forms, and at Loria, these take the shapes of marble, brass, lucite, crystal, bronze, jadestone, onyx, pewter, walnut, rosewood and so on. The expression of recognition is, in the proverbial nutshell, what we provide at Loria Awards - and such an expression can be attained no matter what the occasion or budget.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> By the way, imagine the Oscars without "Oscar". Would Spielberg have been thrilled? Take this past winter's Olympics, less the medals. Would Bonnie Blair and Dan Jansen have noticed? Well, we all know these answers. Let us just remember the importance of recognition and let us, at Loria Awards, help you express it.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Summertime is a time for vacations, b<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">ut it's also a time for recognition. Whether you spend your vacation time at home or take a change of setting, it can be a fun time of recognition that will compliment very special memories for years to come. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">A more "relaxed" form of recognition usually predominates this time of year (as it should be), but there are many opportunities for recognition while we take the time to re-charge the batteries. There is still occasion to "recognize" those we with whom spend our precious summertime moments.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Though we still have to work, we hopefully still have some portions of time to commemorate those very special occasions. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Whether it's a friendly competition of recreation during a family reunion, an organized league of summertime sports (like softball, baseball or swimming), special summer camp events, or simply for a "job well done" (for whatever that "job" may be), there are moments worth beholding with some form of recognition.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> That's where we, at Loria, come in. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">In our safe & secure, e-commerce website<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">, you can easily browse and order whatever fulfills that form of recognition.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">We can truly call our company "a company for all seasons". <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">To be precise, such a title can only apply to companies in places that actually have four seasons! <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Now we're not among the many "companies for all seasons" that landscape in the summertime and plow snow in the wintertime. Nor are we supplying swimming pools in the summertime and fireplaces in the wintertime. But we are still in fact "a company for all seasons" - just not the usual type<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> As a U.S. business in northeast region of the country, in which there are sharp and extreme changes to each season, we certainly qualify for such a title. For those not familiar with this area, it's a region in which the temperatures can be in the single<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> digits in the wintertime and be pushing triple<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> digits in the summertime!<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Even the predictability of those extreme weather patterns have become somewhat puzzling in recent years. Heck, it was 37 degrees (F.) this morning with a light mix of rain and snow falling, which would be fine if today wasn't April 6th!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> So that said, this post may only be of great interest to New Yorkers, New Jerseyites and New Englanders, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">along with much of the Eastern Seaboard. This may also appeal to <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Upper Midwesterners, Pacific Northwesterners and Rocky Mountain folk. The post may be of great 'irrelevance' to most of California, the Southwest, the Deep South and Hawaii - but I digress.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> As those who may be familiar with our company (or who have read previous posts in this blog), we are basically 'two-companies-in-one'. But it didn't happen as a matter of concern for having a 'summer-ready' business in the summer and a 'winter-ready' business in the winter. In fact, winter and summer aren't even our strongest times of year- spring and autumn are (and that happened progressively in a very personal way).
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> As shown on our history page, we were originally a purveyor of hand-crafted pool-tables on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">But the founder's son personally loved bowling so much (at one time belonging to five leagues on a weekly basis), that he extended that passion into the company's business. The sport's popularity was escalating on an unprecedented scale at the time in the 1940s and 1950s. So it turned out to be quite a wise move and the growing pool-table shop on the Bowery also became the first call shop for bowling balls and supplies as well. At one time, we had lines out the door and around the corner for the most popular bowling ball brand of that era (Manhattan Rubber), which were expertly fitted and drilled by none other than the founder's son himself!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Now this was all well and good. But as we discovered, there is an ebb and flow in the popularity of recreational sports, sports leagues are ultimately seasonal, and businesses (meaning: the people in business) pay bills year round. Bowling leagues at that time of great popularity were predominantly "trophy leagues" - meaning that winning teams were awarded trophies at the end of each season. The founder's grandson picked up on that as an opportunity when it was time to expand our business and expand our reach in the greater New York metropolitan area. In fact, he picked up on it and took it a few steps further. It was nice to see people who bowl being recognized for a job well done and be able to capitalize on that. But aren't all competitive sports conducted and concluded this way? Also, don't all people have a need to be recognized for a job well done?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Those questions would be answered definitively when our Yonkers store opened in 1959. Subsequently, Loria would become the most popular supplier of bowling trophies in the New York metropolitan area. This eventually leads to building an in-house production shop for the manufacturing of every type of award product conceivable.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Two moves and fifty-nine years later, Loria continues in Yonkers, New York, as an established and well-recognized, fourth-generation family business. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Even though the original NYC location was eventually closed in 1998, w<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">e have retained the trade of our company's founding (pool tables, pool-table supplies and service). We also expanded into previously uncharted territory with the introduction of recreational darts in the 1990s, as well as expanding our all-purpose recognition business - a division that has become an integral part of our company. Since its introduction in the late 1950s, our recognition division has grown from supplying trophies to bowling leagues to literally providing "awards for all<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> occasions" as well as innovative, in-house engraving services.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Even though the bowling division was subsequently discontinued after roughly fifty years, due to drops in the sports popularity over the years, it deserves a nod of gratitude as it was that division which subsequently opened the door to our recognition business - a part of our company that has expanded exponentially over the years and remains perpetually as the steady, predominant staple in our company.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> What's more, and perhaps the most important point of this article, is that even though we are indeed a "company for all seasons", we do not selectively do one thing in one season and something else in another season. We are here year-round serving the needs of our customers in both our original pool-table/pool-table service division and our expansive awards/engraving division. As I mentioned earlier, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">we are still in fact "a company for all seasons" - just not the usual type<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">.
This, of course, means that we make a livelihood selling products and services that symbolically represent the deeds and achievements that our buying public deems worthy of recognizing.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Putting the commodity aspect of the recognition business aside for a moment, we are careful not to lose sight of the inherent, human need for recognition. We humans, whether we acknowledge or not, and whether we express it or not, like to be recognized. Recognizing that reality (pun entirely intended) keeps those of us who are in the recognition business on an even keel as well, with regard to being mindful of the importance of recognition in society. Even those individuals in society who wish to remain anonymous after an act of benevolence are still comfortably mindful of their altruism, which at its very core, still demonstrates to the etymological root meaning of the word itself.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> The word "recognition" is based on the ancient Latin word "recognoscere", which means "to know again" or "call to mind". On its face, the word can be visibly split into two entities: the prefix "re" (meaning "repeat" or "again") and the noun "cognition", which is synonymous with "thought" (and also a grammatical variation of the word "cognitive"). In this way, the word "recognition" can literally be translated as the phrase "thought again". When we recognize something or someone, we are recalling and expressing that remembrance.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> In a 1943 psychological study paper by Abraham Maslow (entitled "A Theory of Human Motivation") , a five-tier pyramid illustrated what was concluded to be our essential needs in life as human beings. The pyramid was called "Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs". <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The fourth tier of the pyramid indicated the needs for feeding a healthy ego and a personal sense of self-esteem. This tier included "recognition", while the fifth and highest tier (called "self-actualization) was the one step beyond dependence on the ego. But getting there included the step to feeding a healthy ego - which requires recognition.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">"Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs", by Abraham Maslow

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Recognition comes in many forms, from the most basic verbal expression of telling someone "job well done" to the affectionate 'pat on the back'. More elaborately, a gift can be given to an individual to commemorate that "job well done", whatever that job or deed may have been. Those manifestations of recognition open the door to much creativity and became the building blocks of the recognition industry.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Here at Loria, we have been a vital part of that industry for just over sixty years now, beginning as a trophy supplier to the local network of bowling leagues in the greater New York metropolitan area, to presently being a full-service, across-the-board, first-call company for products of recognition for any and every occasion. We supply the most popular, mass-produced recognition products but we also take on the most unusual requests, which has been one of our strongest suits for many years. For example, we recently mounted a small stack of gold-painted bagels atop a large gold-plated loving-cup with an ornamental crown surrounding and stabilizing the bagels. Yes, when we say "full-service", we mean it!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> So next time you think of "recognition", don't forget to "recognize" Loria as your one-stop, full-service awards and engraving supplier. We can both do our parts in bolstering a healthy sense of self-esteem in society!
I'm just taking a moment here to let the world know that our awards selection is veritably excellent! It's a simple as that. Yes, I'm bragging here a little bit. But what the heck? I was straightening out our showroom collection of floor samples today and putting things back in 'tip-top' order and I noticed that we have so many variations on each sport, theme and subject that we offer.
Besides our online presence, we are 'old-school' with keeping our 'brick & mortar' selection attractive and full of options for every budget and occasion. It also keeps our return customers satisfied as well (of which there are many) - and if anything is our 'highest priority', that would be it!
Frozen lakes are becoming either makeshift hockey-rinks or figure skating showcases, the lights of Friday night are gleaming on thousands of high-school football fields, and skiers are rejoicing as they make their plans to scale and slide down the nearest peaks.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">There are also the indoor winter sports that traditionally take place this time of year like basketball<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">, as well as the "fan sports" like fantasy football<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> and fantasy basketball<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Suffice it to say that winter sports have wound up, and for those in competition in those sports (as well as those who do it just for fun) have the need to recognize those who are excelling in those sports - whether it's a league championship or an annual family gathering. Let's also not forget the "ugly sweater" competitions taking place at homes and offices across the nation this holiday season!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> It doesn't have to be a national championship to merit some sort of recognition for those near and dear to you. It can simply be for those who give their very best effort in whatever pursuit they've taken on this winter.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">
When we started out in the awards business, it began as an outgrowth of the (now defunct) bowling equipment division of our company. Just that you be fully informed, the bowling division was an outgrowth of our original business - pool table manufacturing and servicing. Bowling, like billiards, were related in their existence as a popular recreational sport. However, when bowling "leagues" were formed, there also came the need for trophies to be awarded at the end of the league's season - a need that increased exponentially over the years and still exists today.
Nevertheless, this is how we initially became involved in the awards business in the late 1950's. This also initiated the thinking that awards are not the exclusive need of bowlers in bowling leagues. Everyone needs to be recognized for something, right? Sure. However, the standard style of a bowling trophy will not fit every taste and be appropriate for occasion.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Over the last six decades, the effort to meet the expansive need for recognition products has required inventive thinking as well as expertise in art, design and various material manufacturing. When we at Loria Awards publish the words "Awards For Every Occasion" as our slogan, it's not just promising to offer a selection of awards that are adaptable to any occasion via the engraving copy, but also via the visual appeal and the aesthetic of the product itself. This appeal and aesthetic is manifested through the material and the way it's manufactured.

Initially, that variety consisted mostly of acrylics due to the innovations in the plastics industry. More recently, glass and crystal have become more accessible to a greater buying public. With the advances made in the manufacturing of glass and crystal materials, meeting the demand for these items (specifically in the recognition industry) has been expedited.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Just so you know, the term "loving cup" (which is the term currently applied to any traditional gold trophy cup) was originally the cup shared by a newly married couple, most notably in French and Scottish antiquity - hence the term "loving cup". That explains why it seems a bit awkward to apply it to the winner's trophy of a competition - especially if that competition was fiercely fought. But the name stuck and that's why it's still here.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> However, if we look at the ancient root of the word itself, we may be even more surprised, if not altogether shocked. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The etymological root of the word trophy<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> is the Greek word <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large; line-height: 22px;">"trophe", which <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">literally means <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">"food, nourishment" (reference: Dictionary. com). This explains where we get the clinical terms like "hypertrophy" for medicine (meaning "fast nourishment") and "dystrophy" for malnourishing - such as in muscular dystrophy (which means the languishing or malnourishment of muscles). <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">But given some thought , we can see it ultimately makes sense and gives us at<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Loria<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> a sense that we doing more than just selling award products (at least in a philosophical sense).
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> If I had a dime for every time I heard these sentiments from a first-time customer, I'd be...well...let's just say I'd have quite a bit more saved for retirement! I usually hear these quoted words (or words to that effect) once a week depending on the time of year (some times of the year are busier than others). It's either the first quote, the second quote or both.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Nonetheless, however and whenever it's said, it just shows me a number of things of which I often need reminding. Among the reminders are: We've been here a long time on the well-trafficked road of Central Park Avenue (Rt. 100) in Yonkers, New York. We've been noticed on this main commercial route much more than we realize. The people who express these sentiments are never disappointed when they finally make their way into the store.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Now our building isn't the eighth wonder of the world. But apparently, the fifteen-foot vaulted ceiling in the front of the building is highly visible for pedestrians and passing motorists. It makes a noticeable difference on the road to any passerby. However, according to many surprised first-time visitors, they thought that was the entire store! But it isn't. What is apparently not visible from the road is the twenty-four foot wide showroom space inside the front of the building and the fourteen foot wide corridor of showroom space that leads to the expanded showroom space in the back of the building.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> In all of the aforementioned spaces, we've consistently kept an <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">attractive display of goods, set up in a tasteful room decor, knowing that taking care of your showroom translates into a more attractive shopping experience for our customers. This is basic stuff actually, "retail 101" if you will. However, it's not always practiced, even in some of the more prominent retail store chains in the area.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> But we're not a chain. We're a family-owned and operated business that was established 104 years ago (and counting) as a custom pool-table manufacturer on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We've had a store in Yonkers for 59 years (and counting) and have been at this present location for the past 43 years (and counting). Since 1998, this has been our sole location. We're still a vendor of quality slate-top pool tables and other "traditional gaming". But we've also become one of the best known awards suppliers in the tri-state area since opening the store in Yonkers 59 years ago.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> So if you're in the Yonkers area and you're in the market for what we offer - or if you're just curious about that building with the high, triangular-shaped roof and stucco siding at 1876 Central Park Avenue (that you've happened to pass by a million times) - take a moment to stop by and take a look inside. You'll find that there's more than what meets the eye compared to what you've seen from outside. You'll probably be a million times surprised as well!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">From
time to time, we receive visits from people who cannot house their trophies,
medals and/or plaques anymore. For a
variety of reasons, they just can’t keep the
physical awards anymore. However, unlike other reactions to such a
predicament (that is<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">, trying to get rid of objects they can’t hold onto
anymore), they don’t try to sell them at tag sales - and more remarkably - they
will not discard them into the trash either.
I am particularly intrigued by this - which is the fact that no matter
how much people cannot keep the physical
awards, something keeps them from
just throwing these objects out with the rest of the things they can’t keep
anymore.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Now be
advised that these are not Olympic Medals or World Cups that we receive in
order to “re-purpose”. These are
generally common awards earned in youth, or early adulthood, which have remained
in somewhat good condition, but have collected too much dust over the years. Nonetheless, whether these are locally won
awards or some well-known icons, these objects have never been - at least in
our experience - rendered “disposable”. Perhaps
psychologically, the earner of these
awards does not want to negate the
significance of their achievement by simply tossing the physical commemoration
of it in the trash. The physical object
may not be needed anymore, for whatever reason.
But it would be disheartening to “dispose of the achievement itself” (in effi<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">gy<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">) by unceremoniously trashing
it. The word “desecration” comes to
mind.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Apparen<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">tly, the prevailing attitude in this<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> phenomenon (which is unique
to the world of retail awards) <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">is:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> This object, which represents a moment in time in which a certain level
of excellence was achieved, should not be buried in a forgettable heap of
garbage. It represents something much
more significant than that. It took time
and effort to prepare and perform the task required to earn the achievement and
- unlike money - time and effort is non-refundable. Therefore, the object that was given to the
person, who spent that non-refundable amount of time and effort to achieve
something special, should be passed on to someone else who may be in the midst
of achieving something special as well.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> So
when someone comes in the store to basically say, “I’m down-sizing and I have to unload these trophies, medals and
plaques. Can you use them?”, I
basically give them two options: If the
items are in good condition, you can leave<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> them here in our store and I can
recycle them and sell them at 'bargain basement' prices - or - you can charitably
donate them to a local boys & girls club.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">many communities, the local boys & girls clubs are a safe<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">-haven
for youth to have a place to engage in confidence-building competitions that
will also teach them other life skills<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">, such as how to <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">deal with both defeat and victory (i.e. sportsmanship,
humility, etc.).<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> These
clubs are often under-funded, so these donated awards <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">become a crucial
element <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">in helpin<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">g to maintain the invaluable community services that these clubs provide.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> So if you’re reading this and wondering what
to do with the awards that you earned <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">'way back when<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">', but can no longer keep<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">, we give you these two aforementioned
options. But we recommend the latter!
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> There was a tagline to a famous old Burger King ad that said, "Have It Your Way". At the time, the burger chain wanted to set themselves apart from the competition with the freedom of choice that they gave to their customers <span style="color: #666666; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">(as implied in the tagline)<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">.
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Even in the world of fast-food, companies understand that no one-size fits all. Moreover, each individual has his/her own particular tastes. This doesn't just go for food, but for just about everything - and especially awards. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">That is why we, at Loria Awards, not only provide an extensive selection of stock-designed wood plaques, acrylics and crystal (just to name a few materials). <span style="color: #666666; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> The chemical composite of "p<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">olymethyl methacrylate" (a.k.a "acrylics") has been used to craft some of the most dramatic and impressive designs in the awards industry, and at a price that is becoming more and more "undramatic" - but nonetheless impressive.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> At Loria Awards, that question has been answered with a resounding "YES" for more than twenty-five years! Since we introduced one of the most "made-to-order" forms of recognition, we have gained a reputation for being the full-service stop for your custom medals needs.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> There is something altogether special about a 'one-of-a-kind', custom-made medal for those extra-special occasions that require it. Maybe it's the well-known tradition of the Olympics that forged (pun intended) the image of the medal as the iconic form of individual recognition.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Whatever the reason may be, Loria has facilitated the concepts, designs, service and skill required to produce the always unique "custom medal". Everything from high-relief, "sculpture-like" portraits to polished, color-filled designs, Loria has taken our customers' ideas and made them into 2D (and 3D) realities.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Not limited only to the medium of the custom 'medal', we also offer the custom-made medallions, coins and commemorative lapel-pins. Please take a moment to browse our website to see just some of the actual jobs that we have produced over the years, or visit our showroom.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">By Roger V. Loria, Jr.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">"Word of mouth" is a very interesting thing. It can either spell "f-a-m-e" or "r-u-i-n" (depending on who's mouth is talking and who's ears are hearing). Of course, a good word about someone is much better for a person's reputation. The same goes for business. No matter what we're selling, every business is in the business of service. When a customer is served well, it makes a personal impact - and it's a personal impact that goes far beyond the doors of a store or the screen of a website.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> The word that a customer spreads is far more persuasive to another potential customer than the most far-reaching of advertising media - and usually the most trustworthy. It's unfiltered and beyond the control of marketing experts, copywriters and television producers. In fact, it is often used by the aforementioned <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">marketing experts, copywriters and television producers to compel a potential customer to become an actual customer.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Traditionally, the "word of mouth" form of building a reputation<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> didn't occur like a wildfire, especially when we began our business over 100 years ago. But over the decades, it gathered, accumulated, gained momentum and, has become the testimony of countless customer<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">s (i.e. 'my friend told me about this place, so here I am...').
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> However, in this online age of "going viral" (the internet version of "word of mouth"), which can either spell "f-a-m-e" or "r-u-i-n" as well (only much, much faster<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">), it is all the more integral to a company's success to be utterly consistent in the area of serving a customer well. A family-owned business, such as ours, usually has an advantage in this - usually knowing this concept early on, in the very upbringing of the succeeding generation. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">But in order to survive and thrive, every business must observe the axiom that has become our philosophy here at Loria Awards:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> “Be the best at what you do, treat every customer with honesty, courtesy and respect, and offer the highest quality products at the fairest prices.”
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> Welcome to the official newsletter of Loria Awards! Yes, we know it's really a "blog" (technically speaking). But when you consider that our company (now in its fourth generation) was established in 1912, it makes things very difficult to stray from more 'organic' terms - like "newsletter". What's our point? We're a family business that has been in the awards & engraving business for more than 50 years, as well as in the pool-table/game-room business for more than 100 years! We were here before the digital age and all things "cyber-minded". We have adapted to the digital age, using its conveniences as best we know how, but our attitude toward customer service and customer satisfaction is anything but "virtual". We know that we serve a clientele who wants something special every time and finding that special something isn't always resolved with the click of a mouse or a swipe of a finger. That's why we have always made personal customer service the hallmark of our business since its founding.
